If you know me well, you know that I’m a huge podcast junkie. Meanwhile, the unexpected death of Josie’s long-absent mother forces her to return to her Midwestern hometown where she must confront the demons from her past-and the lies on which she has staked her future. When investigative reporter Poppy Parnell sets off a media firestorm with a mega-hit podcast that reopens the long-closed case of Josie’s father’s murder, Josie’s world begins to unravel. The only problem is that she has lied to Caleb about every detail of her past-starting with her last name. Now, Josie has finally put down roots in New York, settling into domestic life with her partner Caleb, and that’s where she intends to stay. After her father’s murder thirteen years prior, her mother ran away to join a cult and her twin sister Lanie, once Josie’s closest friend and confidant, betrayed her in an unimaginable way. Josie Buhrman has spent the last ten years trying to escape her family’s reputation and with good reason. The only thing more dangerous than a lie…is the truth. Now I need to go watch Making A Murderer again! Any other fans out there? Even though it pissed me off, I still loved watching it.Serial meets Ruth Ware’s In A Dark, Dark Wood in this inventive and twisty psychological thriller about a mega-hit podcast that reopens a murder case-and threatens to unravel the carefully constructed life of the victim’s daughter. So, overall, if you want a good thriller and if MAKING A MURDERER intrigued you, then I’d highly recommend that you pick this one up!

This book is told primarily through Josie’s perspective, but the book is mixed with the podcast, news articles about the murder, interviews, and even discussion threads from Reddit and Twitter. It makes the reader wonder, why is this case being reexamined? What details were we missing before? Josie is a complicated character with a horrific past, but Barber does a great job in developing her. Like some other reviewers have pointed out, the podcast and it’s reason for starting definitely reminded me a little of MAKING A MURDER. That gave this thriller a more modern twist, in my opinion. I really enjoyed the element of social media and the role that the podcast played. Can she face her past and save the future she has built based on countless lies? The social media storm that follows is one she can’t hide from and then when her mother commits suicide, she is forced to go back to her hometown in Illinois.

Even though the killer was convicted and sentenced, Poppy believes there is more to the story. Her new life comes to a screeching halt when investigative reporter Poppy Parnell begins a podcast that is opening up her father’s murder case. Their life together is great, except for the fact that she has lied to him about every detail of her past. Josie has traveled the world and changed her name – now she has settled down in Brooklyn with her boyfriend Caleb.
